After coming to terms with the death of the Warhammer Fantasy I've known since my start in wargaming, I decided to purchase and paint the starter box for Age of Sigmar. The models are what really interested me about the new game and I figured, at a minimum, I'd have both sides to be able to run games with friends in the future.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Tim. the local manager of my GW store, and I guy I've known for many years, was gracious enough to find time to play my first game of AoS. It was my Stormcast Eternals versus his Khorne Bloodbound. Tim is an AMAZING painter as you can see from the pictures of his Khorne stuff below. </div>

<br />
A good friend and fellow gamer, Joe Krone, has started a new venture in the gaming arena with the founding of his new company Watchful I Studio. He has covered all the Internet marketing and you can check out the companies progress on the web (<a href="http://watchfulistudio.com/">watchfulistudio.com</a>) and Facebook. <br />
<br />
Plus, like any good miniature project these days, Joe has started a Kickstarter to help get his company off the ground.<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<iframe frameborder="0" height="420" scrolling="no" src="https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/2104924145/28mm-ancient-chinese-warring-states-qin-dynasty-mi/widget/card.html?v=2" width="220"></iframe></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
The master miniatures shown so far plus the painted versions he's done look fantastic. So of course, I had to jump in on the Kickstarter. Looking forward to seeing how far the project gets and what goodies get unlocked. It only took 6 days to reach his goal so I have high hopes for the remaining 23 days.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
So please, check out Joe's project and help support a great guy and fellow miniature gamer.</div>

<br />
I had seven goals last year of which I completed three with a fourth partially complete.<br />
<ul>
<li>Finish my Fallschirmjager additions for FOW (Fail)</li>
</ul>
<div>
This has gone on the back burner for the foreseeable future. </div>
<ul>
<li>Finish Jordanians for Arab/Israeli war FOW (Done)</li>
<li>Finish FOW terrain (Partial)</li>
</ul>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i275.photobucket.com/albums/jj287/jwelling72/Flames%20of%20War/F57FDB79-359D-40A1-99DB-38A8F347FD61_zpstxb2kcw1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i275.photobucket.com/albums/jj287/jwelling72/Flames%20of%20War/F57FDB79-359D-40A1-99DB-38A8F347FD61_zpstxb2kcw1.jpg" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i275.photobucket.com/albums/jj287/jwelling72/Flames%20of%20War/67018413-3711-4479-A6DD-DC15E212ACF2_zpsbyop00zg.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i275.photobucket.com/albums/jj287/jwelling72/Flames%20of%20War/67018413-3711-4479-A6DD-DC15E212ACF2_zpsbyop00zg.jpg" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I finished all of the Jordanian models I originally intended and have actually added two anti-aircraft tanks, so this was a true finish for me. I also did terrain for this FOW game (The palm trees, roads and an oasis)</div>
<ul>
<li>Play in a FOW tournament at Adepticon (Done)</li>
</ul>
<div>
I finally had the chance to play FOW in a tournament setting at Adepticon 2014. I played in the FOW Team Tournament with my friend Tyler. We both ran Germans, me with my Fallshirmjager and Tyler with his Stugs. We did horribly in our games, losing all of them. Yet, we had a good time and certainly learned more about playing the game.</div>
<ul>
<li>Paint a 750 evil force for LotR (Fail)</li>
</ul>
<div>
With the slow death of Lord of the Rings, what with the recent Hobbit releases from GW (or lack thereof), there has been little interest in rings around the area. With other priorities nagging at me, this ended up staying in the painting Que for the time being. But I'll be back to LotR regardless of GW.</div>
<ul>
<li>Paint 1000 points of IG (Fail)</li>
</ul>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I did manage to assemble almost everything, base coated most of it and even painted a few models. But since this was more a personal project than something I was required to complete for some event, I just didn't have the time so this project was postponed.</div>
<ul>
<li>Play 40k (Done)</li>
</ul>
<div>
I actually got to play 40k a few times last year and I really enjoyed the games. A big thanks to Andrew, the manager of the GW Lakeview Plaza store for taking time to teach me the rules and play a few games. I barely scratched the surface of the game as we never got too far past the basic rules. But every game left me more determined to finish painting my Astra Militarum (as they are now known).</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i275.photobucket.com/albums/jj287/jwelling72/40k/13DB1A02-1C51-4BF1-8E0E-E0B29BE1AE0E_zpszfzlch7p.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i275.photobucket.com/albums/jj287/jwelling72/40k/13DB1A02-1C51-4BF1-8E0E-E0B29BE1AE0E_zpszfzlch7p.jpg" height="238" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
ON TO 2015!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I'm calling this The Year Of Me as I intended to devote more time to doing the projects I want as opposed to preparing for tournaments or events like Adepticon. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<ul>
<li>Paint an Imperial Knight</li>
<li>Finish my ECW Royalists</li>
<li>Finish my Astra Militarum army (at least 1500 points)</li>
<li>Paint 1000 points of Empire for Fantasy</li>
<li>Paint my Battle of the Five Armies box and put on a game</li>
<li>Paint 1000 points of Space Wolves</li>
</ul>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
My track record of completing these year-long hobby lists has not been good so check out how things go this year for me, Wish me luck!</div>

You know, the problem where you are so psyched about a project but then you see something new and shiny and suddenly you've put that other passion project on the back burner? Well, that's how I've been feeling of late. I have my "To Do" list: English Civil War, Land of the Free (AWI), Gorgon Studios figure painting, Fate of a Nation. Then there are those little distractions that I just can't get out of my mind. For instance......<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg47Dm_4peFtqyExE94HXD-qpXHO7kx1INcQLei5gVItJvXyFKrVGDBfPGRJmD3_YaA1l3dPyzKsDIzK3SFsWQsDSj_ufJn3O8AHD9c3yxYTU8o_Zu0euClOk5eYsssKxR6EKKX4iKAX1U0/s1600/DSC04592.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg47Dm_4peFtqyExE94HXD-qpXHO7kx1INcQLei5gVItJvXyFKrVGDBfPGRJmD3_YaA1l3dPyzKsDIzK3SFsWQsDSj_ufJn3O8AHD9c3yxYTU8o_Zu0euClOk5eYsssKxR6EKKX4iKAX1U0/s1600/DSC04592.JPG" height="320" width="271" /></a></div>

An Empire Captain for Warhammer Fantasy! I haven't played Fantasy in many years but the new End Times book "Nagash" along with some folks at the local GW had my mind pre-occupied with thoughts of the Empire and my Fantasy glory days.</div>

A Space Wolf Blood Claw!! Now, I actually have played a couple of games of 40k plus I have a 1500 Astra Militarum force assembled (and 5% painted). But when the Stormclaw Starter Box was released many months back I had to scratch the itch. I've always been interested in Space Wolves, loved the new models and my buddy was itching to buy it for the Orks. So, we both purchased it and then traded each other so I got all the Space Wolves and he got all the Orks.<br />

A fraking Imperial Knight!?!? This one is thanks to a friend who is running some games at Adepticon including Adeptus Titanicus and a Imperial Knights Tournament. He was trying to recruit me and although I attempted to resist, he made an offer I couldn't refuse. Hell, who am I kidding? It didn't take much for him to convince me. OF COURSE I want to paint an Imperial Knight!</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
So there you have it. Three models I didn't need or plan to do at this point but there they are. The Empire and Space Wolves will go back in the queue for another day but the Knight is now an ADDITIONAL project I need to complete for Adepticon 2015. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
And that, my friends, is what happens if you don't control your hobby ADHD. </div>

When the Flames of War supplement for the Arab-Israeli War came out, I was inspired to paint up some forces for the conflict. After talking to a couple of fellow gamers, we chose our sides and made a commitment to complete our first 1000 points. Two of us managed to reach that goal, myself with a Jordanian force and Sam with an Israeli force. Our first game was set at 1050 points (the amount I had ready). Sam was joined by another member of the group (John) and to battle we went.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
On their right flank that had 2 Magach tanks plus priority air support</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i275.photobucket.com/albums/jj287/jwelling72/Flames%20of%20War/6DDDE3B9-C051-42E2-BFD4-DB1D0325A86A_zpsvyppodax.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i275.photobucket.com/albums/jj287/jwelling72/Flames%20of%20War/6DDDE3B9-C051-42E2-BFD4-DB1D0325A86A_zpsvyppodax.jpg" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Things on my right flank went well as two of my M48's took out the Israeli Shermans over the course of several round. This negated the Israeli left flank and made it impossible for them to capture their objective on my right flank. Unfortunately, I had dismounted my infantry and then realized to late I had the opportunity to seize my objective from their depleted left flank. I remounted and moved at the double to try and take advantage and rush the objective.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i275.photobucket.com/albums/jj287/jwelling72/Flames%20of%20War/6BDEB5B0-2DCD-4FD4-9DCA-FBBA94CA82D0_zpshutbyjwa.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i275.photobucket.com/albums/jj287/jwelling72/Flames%20of%20War/6BDEB5B0-2DCD-4FD4-9DCA-FBBA94CA82D0_zpshutbyjwa.jpg" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
My left flank was ineffective in dealing with the two Magachs across from them. The Israelis used smoke to force me to move forward and thus reduce my rate of fire. This, coupled with air support and the Israeli mortars, slowly took its toll on my left flank.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i275.photobucket.com/albums/jj287/jwelling72/Flames%20of%20War/67018413-3711-4479-A6DD-DC15E212ACF2_zpsbyop00zg.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i275.photobucket.com/albums/jj287/jwelling72/Flames%20of%20War/67018413-3711-4479-A6DD-DC15E212ACF2_zpsbyop00zg.jpg" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Near the games end, I had destroyed two Israeli Platoons but had lost three of my own. My left flank, which included my HQ tank was utterly destroyed. With his forces depleted and my still having two tank platoons, a mechanized infantry platoon and an artillery platoon, I decided to rush the objective on the Israeli left flank. We ended the game at that point with it looking like a win for the Jordanians but in reality it would have been close and might have come down to assault with his remaining forces.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Another fun Ancients game at Mike's house.....well, fun for the Republican Roman commanders at least!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Republican Romans faced off against the Carthaginians and allies. As usual at Mike's, we used Tactica as our rule set. Before gaming with Mike I had never encountered these rules before. As I learn more I like the rules. They are fairly simple compared to many rule sets so lend themselves to a easy game for people new to the rules. The hardest part for me is movement, as the rules try to replicate the style of Ancient warfare by making maneuvers fairly difficult to perform. This can make taking a flank difficult as you usually have to break some units first to break through and then turn on the flank.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
As I alluded to above, the dice were not with the Carthaginians this day. As for the Romans, things went much better. In particular, my Roman cavalry (supported by skirmishers) destroyed Mike's left flank force quickly enough to bring their numbers to bare on the exposed infantry flank. Considering how poorly I usually roll, I think Mike was stunned at my sudden good fortune. The good new for Mike is that my luck never holds so it could be 2015 before I get another run of dice luck like this game.</div>

This month was Macedonian Greeks with an awesome array of pike units. The models looked great but I did manage to stick myself with several pikes in my arm and partial destroyed a stand of Greeks due to me catching the pikes and pulling the unit off of the table!<br />

My co-general, Bill, devised a plan of waiting back and letting the enemy come to us. I held the right flank and was facing the Cataphracts which I was very nervous about. I held up his lighter cavalry on that flank and positioned myself to be able to flank but all for nothing. His cavalry broke through my wing and began to attack my infantry flanks. My unit held a few turns but I failed to do enough damage in the center to break any of my opponents models (plus some damn good rolls on their part as well!).</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
We had broken through on their right flank as well but one unit of infantry held up our forces and bought their army enough time to break us in the middle. In the end, it was a defeat for our side, but still a really fun and awesome looking game.</div>

It looked like my posting schedule was starting to pick up in the 2nd half of 2013 but sadly it all fell apart with the holidays. So this is very late but I wanted to start 2014 with a look back at my hobby resolutions for 2013 and a look at what is ahead for 2014.<br />
<div>
</div>
So below is my resolutions for 2013 and the indication if they were completed or not.<br />
<ul>
<li>Paint a Confederate Brigade (130+ figs) for the Guns of April project (DONE)</li>
<li>Finish my Fallschirmjager additions for FOW (PARTIALLY)</li>
<li>Finish my FOW terrain (FAIL)</li>
<li>Play more FOW games (DONE)</li>
<li>Play in a FOW tournament (FAIL)</li>
<li>Paint two new 600 point LotR armies (DONE)</li>
<li>Paint 1000 points for the Badab War project</li>
<li>Play some 40k games (FAIL)</li>
</ul>
So 3 complete and one partial out of 8. About the same as in 2012. The completed projects were really enjoyable especially the Guns of April ACW project. I also have two new armies for LotR, something I sorely needed. And I actually played 5+ games of FOW which is a LOT for me.<br />

My resolutions for this year are mostly house cleaning for the things I failed to complete in 2013.<br />
<ul>
<li>Finish my Fallschirmjager additions for FOW</li>
<li>Finish Jordanians for Arab/Israli war FOW</li>
<li>Finish FOW terrain</li>
<li>Play in a FOW tournament at Adepticon</li>
<li>Paint a 750 evil force for LotR</li>
<li>Paint 1000 points of IG</li>
<li>Play 40k</li>
</ul>
I'll try and keep the list a little smaller and see if that helps me get my hobby list finished this time. To give you a preview of one of my projects, here is my first 600 points of Jordanian M48 Pattons for <a href="http://www.flamesofwar.com/online_store.aspx?CategoryID=13467">FOW Arab-Israeli War</a><br />

Bilbo's Birthday Bash 2013 is over and what a FANTASTIC event it was! Above you can see a variety of pictures from my games and a few of other forces including Jeremy William's Best Middle-earth theme award winning force.<br />
I had 6 fun games even though I lost more than I won. The new venue at the Northbook Hilton was great and the swag for registering was outstanding as always. The Hero Tracker was a genius idea and I had to buy more so I had one for each of my White Council members of my force.<br />
<br />
Stay tuned for more pics of my two forces and my thoughts on what is next for LotR for me in 2015.Jamiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14723565744491156292noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2770881557435858764.post-61444025766254221982013-10-19T11:22:00.002-05:002013-10-19T11:22:05.577-05:00Where have you been hiding?Over the first half of this year I was really proud of my efforts to keep this blog updated. I was getting in at least one post a month and sometimes more. But suddenly, summer hit and I found myself with less time to update things here. I was doing stuff, just nothing I had the time to post about. But as we enter fall it's time to get this blog back on schedule and for me to get my hobby mojo back.<br />
<br />
In the meantime, here are a few of the things I've been up to these past couple of months.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgOejElqWBt0fPhxt0J2A6XkeWY1_dOsOxlcRFCqlwQYpHteOSvb980tGOb8QQhv2Lm5ctwC4CF8VeSXCc5S1rIMQOgkg9sN7x-FMMivopwI7Yq13AG2lBe8-e6ybWuvoT_izOiP7BN5NSa/s1600/DSC04473.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgOejElqWBt0fPhxt0J2A6XkeWY1_dOsOxlcRFCqlwQYpHteOSvb980tGOb8QQhv2Lm5ctwC4CF8VeSXCc5S1rIMQOgkg9sN7x-FMMivopwI7Yq13AG2lBe8-e6ybWuvoT_izOiP7BN5NSa/s320/DSC04473.JPG" width="205" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I don't play Eldar but when they new codex was released I was really intriqued by the new models, especially the Wraithguard and the Wraithknight. My local GW store was running a painting competition with a Wraith theme and I was talked into entering. Not wanting to drop $100+ on a Wraithknight I went for the new Wraithguard kit.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This is the first new GW plastic kit I've assembled and I was amazed at the quality and the versatility of the kit. You can very easily create different poses with no need of conversion. I chose a basing theme that matched my Imperial Guard army I'm planning with the thought that I could do an Eldar ally contingent for my future army.</div>

Until this month when I finally managed to get a game in against my friend Tyler. I took 1800 points of my German Fallschirmjager against his Russian Stralkovy. This was my first time to try out my potential additions including a Machine Gun Platoon and a Mortar Platoon. Both worked well, especially the Machine Gun Platoon so I'll likely be adding the maximum of two to my force. We finally had a full game and had the chance to do more assaults so we are starting to learn the rules a bit more.<br />
<br />
So, stay tuned as my next projects are to finish my additional units and tank hunters as well some terrain for my own table. <br />

I also have some shots of my own forces in action from that game and will try and get those up either here or on the Guns of April site in the near future. Although the game was called as a minor Union victory, my pride still won't accept this fact. <br />
<br />
All joking aside, this was another great project and I was thrilled by how much I was able to get done. I fell short by one stand (a horse holder) to use when my cavalry dismounted, which it turns out, never did anyway!<br />
<br />
So below are shots of the finished force I painted for the event. Knowing I could get this together has given me hope of not only adding more confederates but starting on a Union counterpart to this force. Only time will tell.<br />

I've always worked on projects for a tournament or maybe with a couple of friends but due to gamer ADHD I never get much done and thus my dreams of some epic battle with tons of figures stays just a dream.<br />
<br />
Not so with this group. These guys have made the dream of an EPIC battle a reality by collecting a huge number of figures, usually for both sides of a conflict. Playing in their games is great as I get to see huge armies on the field, push some figures around and have a great time with some great guys. Best thing is, I don't have to bring a thing to participate as they have all the figures!<br />
<br />
My most recent game with the group was an Ancients battle put on by our friend Mike. He had his Republican Romans vs. various Italian Tribes. Not only did it look great but I had the pleasure of seeing a LOT of our <a href="http://www.gorgon-studios.com/" target="_blank">Gorgon Studios</a> Etruscans on the field. Really an inspiration for me and maybe someday I can get something half as large an army painted up.<br />

My count showed over 500 figures on the table which is something I've rarely had the pleasure of seeing in person. We used the Impetus ruleset that the group (besides myself) are familiar with. It appears to be a fairly "basic" ruleset which, although maybe not be as flexible in tactical variety, makes for a quick, easy game that anyone can play. For me, I just want to see some cool models, roll some dice and have some laughs so simple is fine by me.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I rolled off and won the chance to play on the Italian side against the Romans. The two armies lined up, our skirmishers scuffled in the middle and our cavalry forces clashed together on our right flank. The chariots were quickly dispatched by the Roman cavalry but Wendel, our cavalry commander, managed to hold up the Roman's left flank nearly the entire game. This bought the rest of us, commanding the infantry, time to advance on the Romans and hopefully finish off enough of their infantry that the cavalry clash wouldn't matter.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
Although my slingers drove off the Roman skirmishers they failed to do much damage to the Hastati beyond and were quickly driven off as well. So after several turns our infantry lines collided and although our rolls were good the Roman's were better. I've never seen so many 6's rolled for pilum throws than I saw in the first couple of rounds of combats, which took a nasty toll on our Italians.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
In the final round both forces were within one unit of breaking. Wendel's cavalry had bought us enough time to finish them but sadly we came up just short and managed to fail the one leadership check that lost us the final unit and the game. So, the Romans eked out a win but just barely.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
It was a great game despite our loss and it left me inspired to finish my Republican Romans (the same minis from Crusader that Mike used in the game) and then work on an opposing force in the form of our Gorgon Studios Etruscans. If I could get 100 figures in each force someday I'd be happy. 500+ will probably never happen for me, but one can dream.</div>

I wanted something small and with the Elves I figured I could spend the time painting the models rather than busting through lots of rank and file.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjxBoN_pDEcgiBcavCkZuqGsD5kzqI1012nAZ6uw9N5_Js0xug1NV2fRKXNNtmkcdd3K6HoosuuHfKz5LZTXWOvXOKbmYJMvp8Lm8LdERAMNxtGDckowCjiFxIYmH50QX_Q3iz9V4d1xb1l/s1600/DSC04430.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="197" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjxBoN_pDEcgiBcavCkZuqGsD5kzqI1012nAZ6uw9N5_Js0xug1NV2fRKXNNtmkcdd3K6HoosuuHfKz5LZTXWOvXOKbmYJMvp8Lm8LdERAMNxtGDckowCjiFxIYmH50QX_Q3iz9V4d1xb1l/s320/DSC04430.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I had envisioned doing a White Council force since I have all of the models and it would be a great excuse to paint them up. After some soul searching (and number crunching) I decided to make it all Elves and to try and make it a family affair of sorts. Galadriel seems a given and Celeborn wouldn't be far behind (I think we know who wears the pants in that relationship). I've always enjoyed the fact that, reading the Lord of the Rings appendices, you realize that Elrond is the son-in-law to Galadriel and thus Arwen is Galadriel's grandaughter. So I had to add them in for that fact alone not to mention that Elrond (and Hugo Weaving) is one of my favorite characters in the movies.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhGaXK8s_FT67mV00bi3klg-ZC18zmWZLY-z_DxN7qTFPJ83WbQmSFWK14ZvD2ilYKUSz-z7PcLyVGDcgiOPDb6gpz0nFSvm5UAPm2BG7n6hqVNX7pYqo1XdTtQu6ELvY5fnFJ33J8-1zJT/s1600/DSC04431.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhGaXK8s_FT67mV00bi3klg-ZC18zmWZLY-z_DxN7qTFPJ83WbQmSFWK14ZvD2ilYKUSz-z7PcLyVGDcgiOPDb6gpz0nFSvm5UAPm2BG7n6hqVNX7pYqo1XdTtQu6ELvY5fnFJ33J8-1zJT/s320/DSC04431.JPG" width="250" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
The other two Elves I chose are Cirdan and Glorfindel. Both are models I've wanted to paint and Cirdan has always been an intriguing character to me when reading the various books outside the direct Lord of the Rings trilogy. Both are also tied to the House of Elrond either directly as in the case of Glorfindel or indirectly in Cirdan's case.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg5rvzXXv8D_LWR9TPvWISVgz1y-tsL6RG63bP8RwS-UTm6HpMiZKqa67Am-t_NmMAcEHDtddkf0XLPR0Ytv3__WFHaTbK9M4ao8ZVq_DgxWJJFeqekjNBB0E3ISOPSkUDyC_d_mq7vZtdk/s1600/DSC04427.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="248" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg5rvzXXv8D_LWR9TPvWISVgz1y-tsL6RG63bP8RwS-UTm6HpMiZKqa67Am-t_NmMAcEHDtddkf0XLPR0Ytv3__WFHaTbK9M4ao8ZVq_DgxWJJFeqekjNBB0E3ISOPSkUDyC_d_mq7vZtdk/s320/DSC04427.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
In keeping with the theme I had for the evil force, I decided to base these in the same way (rock bases with dead grass) but replace the snow with flowers. The thought being that the power of the Elves (such as Galadriel in Lothlorien) is able to combat the corrupting effect of Sauron's evil.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhap9kYD4huwiVmptaAhSEbXPUVGcvNyPqsspzo54zo6uyFoPQHq8I-c0GylJLOHywWzT7lDOcsRUfbNK0a6c8xkNj8wk_ZL5avqrzJe2ONN1SyafY_NoLT0fyr44Sv-dm6UBJu27Lr9OHX/s1600/DSC04426.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="231" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhap9kYD4huwiVmptaAhSEbXPUVGcvNyPqsspzo54zo6uyFoPQHq8I-c0GylJLOHywWzT7lDOcsRUfbNK0a6c8xkNj8wk_ZL5avqrzJe2ONN1SyafY_NoLT0fyr44Sv-dm6UBJu27Lr9OHX/s320/DSC04426.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This force is going to be feast or famine when it comes to games. Since I don't care much about wins I'm ok with that, I only hope I can give my opponents a challenge before I get whopped. These Elves have a lot of magic and some tough combat characters (Elrond, Celeborn and Glorfindel) so I think they may present a non-traditional challenge both to me and my opponents.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
5 months until B3 and I'm already half way done with my good force. I like building small armies!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

That changed with last years B3 tournament as I was totally inspired by the great armies I saw on display. That, coupled with every game going to full time made me certain that I needed a smaller force. I lose way more than I win and using Dwarves and Minas Tirith seemed to often prolong the inevitable and make me miss out on the fun downtime you often get at tournaments. <br />
<br />
One of the forces I faced was a cool monster themed list with spiders, bats and dwellers. I had always envisioned doing a monster list from Angmar but after some suggestions from Johnathan (the owner of the monster list I faced) I decided on basing it from the Moria list and using the two special character goblins that work well with monsters (Ashrak and Druzhag). With the move to 750 points for this year I had to slightly tweak my list by adding some "ghosts" in the form of Barrow Wights and Spectres from the Angmar list (I'm trying to use the models I own and not purchase more).<br />
<br />
My first model for my evil force is a wild warg. In an attempt to match my Dwarves bases and to adhere to a theme of decline/death/winter for the corrupting evil force I went with a rocky base containing dead grasses and snow. My inspiration for the decay theme came from the recent Hobbit film and the way they portray the evil and corrupting effects of The Necromancer on the forest of Mirkwood.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhqL2_NcwdDbcnmV2DL_OaH9E6ewcPXYkCzN2-GwpdYQrGnq-_F7nC17XSTwtvH2E9vz1qO2PJE_4BOe1EF6QN2SczIyjjbUCoQ1uxrpW3ngYy_RI2aILRW2FiO8VBwq_vfJR87GzPuZcsy/s1600/DSC04433.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="262" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhqL2_NcwdDbcnmV2DL_OaH9E6ewcPXYkCzN2-GwpdYQrGnq-_F7nC17XSTwtvH2E9vz1qO2PJE_4BOe1EF6QN2SczIyjjbUCoQ1uxrpW3ngYy_RI2aILRW2FiO8VBwq_vfJR87GzPuZcsy/s320/DSC04433.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
My final force will be a combination of creatures including wargs, spiders, bats, and a cave troll all lead by the goblin heroes and the Spider Queen. Allied in will be some Barrow Wights and Spectres representing some of the non-animal creatures in the Dark Lord's service.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I'm not going to the extreme lengths that some of my fellow Lord of the Rings friends are</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
(i.e. check out the FUBAD group at one of the member's blogs: <a href="http://chefofwar.blogspot.com/">http://chefofwar.blogspot.com/</a>) </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Yet, I have used this project as a chance to try some small things I've always thought looked cool. One is to sculpt the bases a bit so they have that raised look to them. I've seen this done by lots of folks and even with basic sand and flock it always looks cool. In my case I also added slate and other large rocks plus bits of terrain blocks for elevation.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

Although the new movie and game release haven't generated the gaming interest I'd hoped we still had a nice crowd of players each day.<br />

I also really wanted to run an Old West game using the Legends of the Old West rules and featuring some of the old west models from our miniature range at <a href="http://www.gorgon-studios.com/" target="_blank">Gorgon Studios</a>. I had big plans for a mini-campaign style game involving 4 posses and two different scenarios played in series. Unfortunately, I had one registration total and that person never showed up. But getting it all setup wasn't a total loss as two of the "Edley boys" and their cousin came over and played. Next year I may try a night game as I think a Saturday morning game conflicted with to many other events and tournaments.</div>

<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/rrpgt/robotech-rpg-tacticstm" target="_blank">ROBOTECH RPG TACTICS!</a> (click here to see more about this project)<br />
<br />
<br />
I had a chance to play a demo of this at Adepticon and the company was also giving away a free Zentradi figure each day in the vendor hall. As if they didn't already have me at "Robotech", the coolest sci-fi/anime/soap opera a 12 year old had ever seen, the free fig and the fun demo was enough.<br />
<br />
Myself and a friend are in on this and set to get tons of bonus stuff thanks to the overwhelming support they have gotten on kickstarter. Yet, with 5 more days left there are still plenty of chances to join in. Not only are the models and background great but if you get in at the right level (Battle Cry and above) you will be getting a ton of great stuff at an incredible price.<br />
<br />
<em>And now, back to your regularly scheduled blog posts.</em>Jamiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14723565744491156292noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2770881557435858764.post-47887914264679908882013-05-13T10:44:00.000-05:002013-05-13T10:53:08.956-05:00Adepticon: Lord of the RingsWith the release of the Hobbit SBG rulebook last winter our small group of LotR players had a shot of new excitement about the game we love. I'll leave to analyses of GW and it's sale strategies to others but let me say I'm just happy to still be able to play the game and use the models I have as the new stuff is a bit rich for my blood.<br />
<br />
The original plan was to have Brent Sinclair run his "March to Mount Doom" event on Thursday night, the Team Tournament on Friday and some Hobbit demos on Saturday and Sunday. All these events either came very close to selling out or sold out and had spots added so I was very pleased with that. We were also fortunate to get some new Hobbit product thanks to the Adepticon sponsor team and the wonderful retailers that support the convention (not GW, but lots of OTHER retailers).<br />

So, now that I have a chance to recupperate I thought I'd share some highlights from the awesome game convention that is Adepticon.<br />
<br />
First up, with Adepticon moving to a Thursday start I decided to use that as an opportunity to do some gaming, since I wasn't scheduled to run anything until Friday. The one downside to this convention is that there is so much to do and not enough time to do it in, although that's not really a bad thing is it? Couple that with helping to run events or setup and there is even less time to play. My contribution is small but others do far more than me and I need to point out the extraordinary efforts some of the organizers and staff go to to make Adepticon what it is. A big thanks to the organizers and staff that spend countless, often thankless hours, prior to and during Adepticon to make it happen. It's only thanks to those dedicated volunteers that Adepticon is the great convention it is.<br />
<br />
Enough of the Adepticon love fest then.....<br />
<br />
I had the chance to sign up for "The Battle of Little Bighorn" game put on by a great guy and friend, Merle Delinger. I've seen him run this the past couple of years and I've always wanted to play in it.<br />
<br />
Merle uses the Old West rules and Blood on the Plains supplement for this game. It involves several Native American contigents, one led by Crazy Horse and two Federal Cavalry contingents. One of these is deployed on table and led by George Custer himself. The other is all mounted releif force that arrives later as a reserve.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjG4DUpBKsQNsZOWeMcvZ0g55BURWCmAmfZzGEgMpb3OKaC0UsrreEfH-BuVuh5E8DkRi7YHwwz-6qfd4XcNKzt0wtsWafTGWdiotzsGvAs3TQc52bPohUdmiGpss6suzlO9kE9AozqCpQt/s1600/IMG_2717.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="189" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjG4DUpBKsQNsZOWeMcvZ0g55BURWCmAmfZzGEgMpb3OKaC0UsrreEfH-BuVuh5E8DkRi7YHwwz-6qfd4XcNKzt0wtsWafTGWdiotzsGvAs3TQc52bPohUdmiGpss6suzlO9kE9AozqCpQt/s320/IMG_2717.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgHS_dqHUgQCsg5PogW5F9_QnxJStlRK7sRNdqLeuy86vf5p5qTWdl6KgM8mx7Rm4bEGKodqFbVRLH9sLYDu5D5Qc0SmUBl4E0JyohCh5ieikwEBgoHAKXbh1sFoIu5BpwKFD69kwyOIh_Q/s1600/IMG_2719.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="297" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgHS_dqHUgQCsg5PogW5F9_QnxJStlRK7sRNdqLeuy86vf5p5qTWdl6KgM8mx7Rm4bEGKodqFbVRLH9sLYDu5D5Qc0SmUBl4E0JyohCh5ieikwEBgoHAKXbh1sFoIu5BpwKFD69kwyOIh_Q/s320/IMG_2719.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
I decided I was feeling anti-government so chose to play as the Native Americans. It was a fun game and all five of us playing had a great time. Even though the reserve force game on first turn we managed to hold them up while Crazy Horse surrounded and finished off Custer. A victory for our side!<br />

Below is a painted version of the model that will be given away (unpainted of course) to attendees.<br />

Due to the machinations of one our members who will go unnamed, we were gently persuaded to do Gettysburg. Since I was the least opposed to painting the "bad guys" I ended up as one of the Confederate commanders. Yet, on the positive side, I was tasked with painting the overall command stand with none other than Robert E. Lee (You'll have to wait for this one). Plus, I love bluegrass music so I've been getting my southern groove on while I paint these guys.<br />

3 for 8 is not great but not the worst I guess. I think I'm most happy that I got some more LotR gaming in and my biggest disappointment is not much FOW gaming.<br />
<br />
So, for 2013, let's see if I can get a least a 4 for 8 or better. Without further ado, here is my hobby resolutions for 2013.<br />
<br />
<ul>
<li>Paint a Confederate Brigade (130+ figs) for the Guns of April ACW project for Adepticon</li>
<li>Finish my Fallschirmjager additions for FOW</li>
<li>Finish my FOW terrain</li>
<li>Play more FOW games</li>
<li>Play in a FOW tournament</li>
<li>Paint two new 600 point LotR armies</li>
<li>Paint 1000 points for the Badab War project</li>
<li>Play some 40k games</li>
</ul>
<br />
To start the new year I thought I'd share my most recent Badab War model for my 1000 point project. This model is actually part of a planned Kill Zone team but I hope to make it part of my larger 40k Imperial Guard army. I kept with the white and blue color scheme of the IG I started and after finishing realized I had secretly channeled my inner Star Wars geek by replicating an AT-AT.<br />

For him it was his first game in a year. For both of us it was our first game with the new Hobbit SBG rules.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh9G3RiSg6jNgAdQDDqCfgCe3zjpEy7-_i_Gg0J9RvXuMgmoz0dGCkvUWYH02gLjyqVf5UGL5hIym6oqfHeONoTas6HUEia7vJUWIwi9gMWoa-ICCqWrC8_OH9JfKQQsQDkE4tR4XbMZ0o8/s1600/IMG_2560.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="316" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh9G3RiSg6jNgAdQDDqCfgCe3zjpEy7-_i_Gg0J9RvXuMgmoz0dGCkvUWYH02gLjyqVf5UGL5hIym6oqfHeONoTas6HUEia7vJUWIwi9gMWoa-ICCqWrC8_OH9JfKQQsQDkE4tR4XbMZ0o8/s320/IMG_2560.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
A quick recap of the game and then I'll try and break down the rules changes and my thoughts on them in general. We played a 600 point game with me bringing 3 Uruk-hai warbands led by Saruman, a Captain and a Shaman while Mike brought 3 Dwarf warbands led by two Captains and Gimli. We played "Lords of Battle". <br />
<br />
My initial deployment found me placing my Uruk-hai crossbowmen on the second floor of a ruined building on my left flank across from Mike's Dwarf archers deployed on a hill on his right flank. To the right of the building I deployed Saruman and his bodyguard in hopes of getting some Sorcerous Blasts off on the Dwarf flanks. Finally, in the center I deployed my third Warband led by the Captain so they could go toe-to-toe with the Dwarves.<br />
<br />
As the game began I managed to get my Shaman to cast Fury using a heroic channelling which meant the fate roll was a 5+ instead of the normal 6+. Saruman, on the other hand, botched his roll for Sorcerous Blast. The crossbowman killed one dwarf archer and that was it. On Mike's turn he called a Heroic Accuracy with his captain positioned by his archers. This allowed them to re-roll any failed in the way rolls. Even though I had hid Saruman behind some Uruk-hai Mike was able to use his archers and the re-roll to force Saruman to take a couple of Fate rolls, which he passed.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhXKaHi5JXxDyoTqX02clCSglAoZ5OWvaxz7n8Ug859oTXgUs2bCxvppmfnsg7_4d-x74iJaUFGKtRy1Tow_nKtfWEmP4TQwLNfUCypwUKGN72CkZZ0MswJWG51cm5oMJ7n35Cpp653MdFL/s1600/IMG_2562.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="195" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhXKaHi5JXxDyoTqX02clCSglAoZ5OWvaxz7n8Ug859oTXgUs2bCxvppmfnsg7_4d-x74iJaUFGKtRy1Tow_nKtfWEmP4TQwLNfUCypwUKGN72CkZZ0MswJWG51cm5oMJ7n35Cpp653MdFL/s320/IMG_2562.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
The following turns saw our two forces get stuck in to combat with me initially having a slight edge in kills. Saruman also managed to get off two Sorcerous Blasts killing a total of 4 Dwarf Warriors and 1 Banner. He also used the Palantir to steal priority giving him a wonderful flank shot of Sorcerouns Blast. On the downside, Mike used another Heroic Accuracy to whittle Saruman down to zero fate and 1 wound. I quickly pulled Saruman back and hid him behind two Uruk-hai forcing Mike to make two in the way rolls. With no might left and all but two archers out of range, Mike took a chance and shot his two in range archers at Saruman. One hit, passed both in the way rolls (on a 5) and then rolled a 6 to wound Saruman! With no fate and one wound that was the end of Saruman giving mike 6 victory points in one figure.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiNOrKjA8UXbsliZKcf9DYNY7nLhrjYIdlAp5S_E1zwbI5_YjMVkRiwn0Ni6PyV3O6gokcMD3SdrmjIOj0qS0kX1p1tToRQppCsa6oVTNALwsGNX1AaoUyOGGyOxBcSaFOHNa12NiauRbHC/s1600/IMG_2563.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiNOrKjA8UXbsliZKcf9DYNY7nLhrjYIdlAp5S_E1zwbI5_YjMVkRiwn0Ni6PyV3O6gokcMD3SdrmjIOj0qS0kX1p1tToRQppCsa6oVTNALwsGNX1AaoUyOGGyOxBcSaFOHNa12NiauRbHC/s320/IMG_2563.JPG" width="306" /></a></div>
The death of Saruman was a sign of things to come. The battle in the center started to turn Mike's way given the intervention of Gimli and the other Captain. At one stage I needed to kill 5 more to get him to break and force a roll off for the end of the game. He needed to kill 8 to do the same to me. For the next two rounds I killed a total of 1 warrior while Mike killed 10 of my guys. I either failed to win combats, Mike seemed to always win the roll offs for ties and if I did win I couldn't wound anything (3's don't wound Dwarves!). Of course, Fury kept me in the game except for my 4 remaining crossbowmen on the flank which promptly ALL failed their courage checks, needing a 7 and I rolled four 6's!! Even though we went three rounds we never rolled the one or two to end the game and finally, with me down to three figs, I cried Uncle and threw in the towel. Even taking out the 3 points for him being unbroken I lost 39 victory points to 16.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

So, the new rules clearly haven't changed my ability to win games which I guess is good news for everyone else. :)<br />
<br />
The new rules are great! The game is the same game as the Lord of the Rings SBG but has definite tweaks to it that give the game some new life and new challenges. The new options for spending Might are very cool. They give characters a chance to use Might when they might not normally do so. For instance, Mike's Dwarf Captain leading the archers used his two points to call Heroic Accuracy which reduced Saruman's fate and wounds to the point where one lucky shot was enough to kill him. With how far out of the battle that model was, without that use of Might for that action that figure may well have ended the game not having used any might at all.<br />
<br />
Heroic Channeling is another great use of Might. Using it on my Fury spell meant I saved wounds on a 5 or 6. I have almost never made a fate roll in the past but with it being 5+ I actually passed three or four. Considering that is about all my Shaman is good for I think I'll be using that move with him in the future.<br />
<br />
The other big change is the added rules for weapons. For my Uruk-hai, they could use Feint which gives you a re-roll of 1's on the wound roll but reduced your fight value by d3. With us both having F4 this wasn't so useful to me. Mike, on the other hand, could do Piercing Strike which increase their strength D3 if they win but reduced their defense D3 if they lose. Maybe if I won the duel roll more often this might have been good for me but with Dwarves high defense (7 usually) even this reduction may not have a huge impact. But the increased strength really killed me, often letting him wound on 4 or 5 instead of 6.<br />
<br />
The two concerns I have are more about tournament games. First, not only the time it takes to decide when to use new Heroic Actions or Special Strikes but the additional time it takes to resolve these (re-rolls, rolling to determine the increased strength, etc.) will add to the length of the game turn. This will lessen as people become more comfortable with the rules but even then I still worry the game will take longer. The second concern is about the use of the Special Strikes themselves. Some models, like the dwarf warriors are armed with axes, making it easy to decide what Special Strike they could use. But, do you declare every time or simple tell the opponent "all strikes are Piercing unless I say otherwise" which is how many people currently handle two-handed weapons. Then there is the issue of warriors armed with two-handed weapons. The rules state that, unless it says they are unarmed a model always has a hand weapon. So, does the model now need to have that weapon modelled on it (it never did before)? And if you choose to use the hand weapon instead of the two-handed weapon can you use a Special Strike and if so which one. So for our game we decided that models such as the Uruk-hai berserker has both a two-handed sword and a dagger (this is generally how it was played before). In this case, if I used the dagger I could have used the Feint strike. In cases like this, I don't like the idea of modeling something that is assumed to be their but I also think there needs to be some rule about what this hand weapon is (i.e. you can't just choose which weapon is best based on the special rule). My personal feeling now is that, if not specified, the hand weapon is always a dagger or sword thus making it easier to know what special strike that can use.<br />
<br />
As you see though, these concerns are really only related to tournament games as I think in friendly games players could establish their own "house rules" to deal with odd situations. All in all, I'm very happy with the new rules and I'm excited to see a renewed interest in the game. I'm not sure how well this will stick but given the small crowd for LotR I feel that any new player is a big win for us.Jamiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14723565744491156292noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2770881557435858764.post-7245539646033764232012-12-10T19:48:00.000-06:002012-12-10T19:48:35.819-06:00It's the most wonderful time of the year!Why? Just because a little film debuts in 4 days called The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey!! Better than that is the release of the new The Hobbit Strategy Battle Game from Games Workshop. Since I have a number of other things to paint AND I also purchased the hardback rulebook, I decided to let me family wrap the limited edition starter set: Escape From Goblin Town so I can open it at Christmas.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiLHCum0XFP_KKcBNKBVcckVGrZdWWdg1nZP2aNvA2pr0GXCUFUNwleiN4PFltUBXhzproFoW-cXP9sn89wHOHJ8oV9mrIn1P9tsxMhY2kZ72exS2OaTAMsVrISyErZM51yxhatfbmme4th/s1600/escape_from_goblin_town_box.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="238" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiLHCum0XFP_KKcBNKBVcckVGrZdWWdg1nZP2aNvA2pr0GXCUFUNwleiN4PFltUBXhzproFoW-cXP9sn89wHOHJ8oV9mrIn1P9tsxMhY2kZ72exS2OaTAMsVrISyErZM51yxhatfbmme4th/s320/escape_from_goblin_town_box.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
I thought I'd take a moment to share my thoughts about the rules and hardback book. Since the shrink wrap is still on the box you'll have to wait for some model reviews until the new year. Before I begin, let's just talk about the elephant in the room; namely, GW's prices. I know, they suck but I've given up complaining about it since I'm still buying the stuff, albeit much less than before. As much as I can dislike their pricing strategies and their attitude toward the community of gamers, I do love the game systems (Lord of the Rings and 40k), the models, and the background (40k). Plus, I know many people who play and who I enjoy being around so in the end, I'm a GW hobbyist whether I like it or not.<br />
<br />
On to The Hobbit Strategy Battle Game. The hardcover rulebook has all the profiles for new models in The Hobbit plus new army lists based around the movie. These new lists coincide with the lists in the Lord of the Rings Sourcebooks released earlier this year. One of the things I was thrilled about was the continued use of the "Warband" lists they started in the sourcebooks. In my mind, this sort of point match system was sorely lacking when The Fellowship of the Rings box was released in 2001. As a result, IMHO, players either tired of the scenario based system or didn't get hooked as it was NOT like starting 40k or Fantasy. All this changed with Legions of Middle-earth, the first supplement to offer dedicated army lists and ally rules. Then came numerous army books based on the same system which finally made it easy to simply start an army rather than recreate scenes from the books and movies. The new sourcebooks and now this new rule set have continued this which I think is a huge plus. You can play scenario based games from the films and books AND/OR point match games like you would for 40k or Fantasy. The best of both worlds!<br />
<br />
Now, one downside to this point match system is the fact that you MUST purchase the hardback rulebook to get the profiles and army lists. The soft cover rulebook in the box game does NOT have these. Underhanded? Maybe, but they have never published profiles and army building with the rules of other systems (you even had to buy new books to build armies for Lord of the Rings in the past) so they'd have sold something to allow army building at any rate (i.e. think a Hobbit Codex to go with your rules). So, it would have cost you either way. GW is good at that, aren't they?<br />
<br />
The other thing I'm so excited about is that the core rules of the Lord of the Rings Strategy Battle Game have remained essentially the same at heart. Same turn sequence, same characteristic names, same priority system, same shoot, combat, magic, etc. Like a true "new edition" it is the core rules with a twist. Changes include things like varying powers of spells, special attacks for various hand weapons, new heroic actions to name the big ones. Although I'm sure some will love these changes and others will hate them, for me I'm just glad it is still the game I love and I look forward to the new challenges and opportunities these changes will bring.<br />
<br />So for now, I'm sticking to finishing the plethora of Lord of the Rings figures I own before I march into forces from the Hobbit. The prices make it easy to put off new purchases but I already feel the call of upcoming models shown in the rulebook. Ah, must stay focused. <br />
<br />
Damn you GW! You keep pulling me back in!Jamiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14723565744491156292noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2770881557435858764.post-683101093607889492012-11-10T23:48:00.001-06:002012-11-26T14:25:56.443-06:00B3 2012: 2 days of LotR SBG goodness!Below is a slide show of pictures from Bilbo's Birthday Bash 2012. <br />
